A fully funded PhD scholarship worth $AUS24,653 per
year for three years is available in the Australian Centre for Cultural
Environmental Research in the School of Earth and Environmental
Science at the University of Wollongong on a project entitled: “Mobile
ecologies, complex landscapes: Cultural environmental research to
understand and enhance invasive plant management in high amenity rural
areas”.
This
project is funded by a Discovery grant from the Australian Research
Council to Dr Nicholas Gill and Dr Laurie Chisholm. The successful
applicant will be required to enrol as soon as possible in 2013.
The
project is to examine management and governance of invasive plants in
high amenity rural areas in Australia characterised by diverse
landowners (e.g. farmers, lifestylers) and land uses. The successful
student will be responsible for research with landholders including use
of contemporary qualitative fieldwork methods such as participant
mapping and interviews, and/or a survey. The project aims to integrate
this social data with remotely sensed and other spatial data and
applicants should be willing to embrace the challenges this will entail.
Funds are available to support research and field expenses as well as
conference attendance.
Applications
are sought from suitably qualified candidates with at least an Honours
degree Second Class, Division One, and/or a Masters by Research degree
in human geography, rural geography/sociology/anthropology, natural
resource management, environmental social science or related
disciplines. Applicants will need to demonstrate research training such
as evident in a substantial thesis characterised by primary research.
Applicants
should initially submit a letter outlining their suitability for this
research and the nature of their research training and any thesis
completed as part of their study so far, a CV, and academic transcripts
for all degrees.
Send
these documents to Dr Nicholas Gill at the email address below. Due to
the Australian summer break receipt will not be acknowledged until after
20/1/13.
The successful applicant will be enrolled in to a PhD in Human Geography at the University of Wollongong.
The scholarship is open to Australian and International applicants.
